Think about when you were younger and all the games you used to make up or stories you used to create when playing with your dolls. Or, as a teenager having down time to daydream, draw, write and imagine what your future would be like. Back then we didn’t have cell phones, internet or social media to fill our time and brain. We had more time to sit with our thoughts and let them run wild.
Nowadays, we fill every second of our time with information. Whether through watching the tv, scrolling on our phones, listening to podcasts, or reading books to learn a new skill or concept. When we are standing in line, we pull out our phones to check social media or our emails. When we are commuting to and from work, we put on a podcast. When we are sitting on the couch, we turn the on the tv. When we constantly processing information, we don’t allow our brain to rest and imagine.

Imagination increases neural activity because your mind is mapping uncharted territory. When your brain starts exploring the unfamiliar, your brain starts to form new neural pathways because it can’t rely on connections that are shaped by the familiar past. When you consciously choose to expand your imagination, you will improve your creative expression, cognition and ability to be present.
As I’ve started to dive deeper into daily communication with my spirit guides, I started to feel that to truly listen to my inner guidance I had to slow down, be present, and use my imagination. I have been in the mode of constantly consuming information – reading spiritual books, listening to podcasts to manifest, learning about my passions, working on my business, and creating content for social media. I realized that I am not giving myself time to just sit, think, imagine and create. Our guides connect with us through our imagination, if we never stop moving and thinking when would we hear them?
I decided that I needed to find ways to let my mind rest and boost my imagination. Here are some of the ways that I found to help turn off the outside noise and allow yourself to tap into your own imagination.
1. Doodling: Sit down with a pen and paper and just doodle.
2. Going for a walk: Leave the phone at home and go for a walk. Listen to the sounds around you and take in your environment.
3. Read fiction books: Take a break from learning and read something fun.
4. Find and Create a Blue Environment: Studies show that the color blue is associated with openness, calmness, and peacefulness.
5. Daydream: We spend all day listening, watching, or reading. Take a moment and let your mind wander – envision your future or a place you would like to visit and make it detailed.
6. Change your routine: when you choose different ways of doing your daily tasks, you activate your brain to learn and to be more open to the unknown. If you are right-handed, try to use your left hand when brushing your teeth. Choose different routes to routine destinations. Try something new, such as a new recipe or workout.
I hope this inspires you to take a break from all the “doing”, the consuming, and allow yourself to be present and let your mind wander.
